Root is Europe’s #1 primary data collection platform for F&B companies. We help our customers to measure and reduce farm-level emissions.

~31% of global GHG emissions originate from food-related activities. For the first time in history, climate performance has become an overall business performance indicator. Enterprises are mandated by regulatory bodies to disclose their climate performance, which leads to increasing pressure from investors, competitors, retailers, and consumers to prevent and reduce their CO2e emissions. Over the next 10 years, companies have set ambitious reduction targets that need to be met. Unlike other industries, the vast majority of F&B emissions originate from farms (known as Scope 3.1 emissions) and are highly complex to address. Root exists to help overcome this challenge.

🔭 What you will work on

Your mission

Collaborate closely with the leadership team to build Root’s People function from scratch. You will drive and eventually own the programs, culture, and operational foundations that enable every team member to thrive. As our first dedicated People Lead, you will design and own the systems that ensure Root remains a high-performing, human-centered organization as we scale across Europe.

📅 Over the next months, you will…

Drive People Programs that support Root’s continuity

  • Own and continuously refine the full OKR cycle across the company, ensuring alignment, clarity, and accountability at all levels.

  • Shape and maintain consistent feedback cycles, compensation structures, career paths, and progression frameworks to support equitable growth and retention.

  • Act as a trusted people partner for all staff members, putting in place feedback mechanisms that help improve and shape our company culture

Build an end-to-end recruiting engine

  • Run full-cycle recruitment across key roles, ensuring an exceptional candidate experience and strong alignment with Root’s culture and mission.

  • Establish scalable hiring processes, scorecards, and employer branding initiatives to attract top talent.

  • Partner closely with hiring managers to forecast hiring needs and design effective org structures.

Own People Operations and internal infrastructure

  • Manage all People Ops workflows end-to-end, including contracts, onboarding/offboarding, HR systems (e.g., Personio), and compliance.

  • Ensure Root’s People operations are fast, reliable, and legally sound as we scale across multiple European markets.

  • Use data and People analytics to inform strategic decisions and improve processes.

🧺 What you bring along

  • 2+ years of experience in People, Talent, Operations, or fast-paced environments where you built or owned people-related processes (prioritising mindset and skill fit over a specific HR pedigree).

  • A deeply people-centric yet business-savvy personality - charismatic, empathetic, proactive, and able to read the room.

  • A hands-on mentality - you thrive in imperfect, fast-changing, early-stage environments and can build structure where needed.

  • Fluency in German & English.

  • Work from our Berlin office 5 days a week.
