Clio is more than just a tech company–we are a global leader that is transforming the legal experience for all by bettering the lives of legal professionals while increasing access to justice.

Summary:

Senior Product Designer - Design System

Clio needs a designer to manage and grow our design system to help the company build high quality software at scale and velocity for our customers according to our standards and best practices. As the designer of a design system you must understand the user’s needs and behaviors, and act as the voice of the users when the team is making decisions about the design system. The users are the designers and developers working on our product teams and—by extension—the users of the software that they build (Clio’s customers).

Responsibilities

  • You regularly meet with product teams (designers, developers, product managers) and other stakeholders (brand, senior leadership) to understand the needs of the business, the needs of the product teams, and the brand strategy overall

  • You take the ideas, inspiration, tech debt, and maintenance from research and work with your “triad” to convert them into a vision, strategies, concepts, and roadmaps for the design system team

  • You ensure documentation (specifications, guidelines, best practices) is kept up to date, is easy to navigate, and is accessible to all of the product teams

    • Ensure new questions are answered in a timely manner and are brought into the documentation

    • Define and publish processes and procedures to help teams self-solve problems based on patterns of questions that teams commonly ask

  • You stay current with design systems best practices and technologies to ensure Clio is evolving with industry trends and web standards (e.g. accessibility guidelines)

  • You create and share improvements to our design standards with design leadership and incorporate those improvements + feedback into the frameworks and components

  • You make it easy (by creating processes, workshops, and pairing) for product teams to contribute their ideas and improvements into the design system while maintaining a balance to ensure we don’t bloat the system and make it harder to use

Required skills and knowledge

  • Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills: you’ll need to share your vision and roadmap with the product teams and senior leaders, you’ll need to create documentation that’s easy to find and easy to understand, you’ll need to create clear and concise project cards and briefs to describe the work and it’s value to stakeholders

  • A solid understanding of accessibility guidelines: you’ll need to ensure that the design system becomes and remains “accessible by default” and provide guidance to teams using the design system to help them write accessible software using the system’s tools, frameworks, and components

  • Strong visual and interaction design craft: you’ll be working with finer details and micro-interactions of our front-end interface components and we want to ensure that our user interfaces and interactions are easy to use, the components are easy to implement, they’re accessible, and they’re pushing us forward to help us be perceived as a leading and innovative product

  • Strong systems design craft: your “product” is a complex design system for multiple products using multiple different tech stacks being designed by multiple different teams, so you’ll be designing solutions that need to help our teams build a scalable and cohesive design system

  • A pragmatic approach to problem-solving: you’ll need to reconcile real needs and use-cases with available frameworks, guidelines, principles to ensure teams are able to deliver value to our customers without being hindered or limited by the design system

  • Effective research and synthesis skills: you’ll be constantly talking to our product teams and other stakeholders to understand the evolving needs of the organization and be able to identify actionable insights to inform the design system vision, strategies, projects, and priorities

Bonus skills

  • Writing HTML, CSS, and Javascript: The main library of components are web-based and it’s important to know about the strengths and limitations of these technologies, but also being able to jump in and write code is a tremendously valuable super-power for a design system designer

  • Knowledge of project/product management tools and frameworks: Familiarity with frameworks like lean and agile; think about prioritization, sequencing, compounding value of the work; coordination and alignment across teams and with external stakeholders; defining missions and strategies
